# Torbakery

On the way to Torbay Beach, there is a small bakery called **Torbakery**. It is hard to miss: a bright, sky-blue house that seems to glow even from a distance. When visitors ask me, “Where’s a good local bakery around here?” I usually recommend this place and **Georgetown Bakery**. It is not that one is better than the other. It simply depends on where I am heading that day, and which one is closer along the way.

I have my own reason for buying bread almost every weekend. In the summer, I often leave home early in the morning and drive along the coastline to go fishing. If I am lucky, I catch cod. But the ocean does not always cooperate. On the days when the cod do not come, it feels a little awkward to go home empty-handed. So I turn toward Torbay, stop at Torbakery, and pick up fresh bread and coffee. Somehow, it feels like a small forgiveness. No fish, but at least warm bread.

Torbakery offers freshly made bread, pastries, and coffee.

Its charm is not in being flashy, but in being a solid, dependable neighbourhood bakery. It is small, but the baking is excellent. I especially like their Italian bread. Their pastries, including brownies, are also very good. I understand why so many people say it is best to go early. Popular items can sell out before the afternoon.

The location is also wonderful. Torbakery is less of a destination you plan an entire trip around, and more of a perfect stop when you are driving toward Torbay Beach or following the coastline. Looking out toward the ocean, feeling the wind, whether the fishing went well or not, and then bringing home a loaf of warm bread — that small routine is what makes this bakery memorable.

If someone is looking for a local bakery near St. John’s, I would say this: if you are downtown, try Georgetown Bakery. If you are taking the coastal road toward Torbay, stop by Torbakery. Especially if you are on your way to Torbay Beach, do not just pass by the little bright-blue bakery. Even on the days when you catch nothing from the sea, you do not have to go home empty-handed.

Torbakery is located at **3 St. Nicholas Lane in Torbay**. You can call ahead at **709-233-2050** if you want to check their hours before visiting.
